We are open to the public Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. Other hours, for veteran or student groups, are available by appointment. Admission is $5 per adult, $4 for seniors, and $3 for students under 18.
During
a part of World War II, musicians were on
strike, and there were no new phonograph
recordings being made. However, the
musicians agreed to support the troops.
Some 900 78 rpm records, called V-discs, were produced between
1942 and 1949 and distributed to the
troops. The Museum is fortunate to have
an example of such a distribution, which is
described here.
We have recently added displays of representative uniforms from all services. Although we have a good selection of basic uniforms, we are short of proper shirts, ties, shoulder boards, and similar accessories. If anyone has any of these small items, we would appreciate a donation.
The
Museum has recently acquired an interesting
28-page report "Operation Darien",
describing a 4 month trek through the jungles
of Panama in 1956. The mission,
conducted by the Intelligence and Reconnaissance
Platoon of the 20th Infantry Regiment, was to
report terrain conditions which would affect
extension of the Pan America Highway southward
(east in Panama) from Panama. Travel was on foot or by
native canoe, with limited air support from an
H-13 and an L-19. (The platoon leader
was Robert Downen, and the pilot was Lt van
Horne.) If anyone would like a
copy of the report, in pdf format, contact the
Museum.
We
are asked from time to time about movies
relating to World War II. Although there
have been some recent movies relating to the
War, the vintage movies below portray true
history:
- Tora,Tora,Tora - The Japanese
attack on Pearl Harbor
- Midway - The turning point of
the war in the Pacific
- The Longest Day - The D-day
landings in Normandy
- 12 O'clock High - The air war
over Germany
We
want to thank Dave Troutman for preparing
and painting the UH-1 Huey and the PBR on display by the
Museum front gate.
Through
the goodwill of a local HVAC technician, the
Museum has replaced (at considerable expense)
two of the 1987-vintage heating and cooling
units on the main floor. In addition,
the Museum funded the installation of a heat
pump in the 8th Air Force Briefing
Room/Classroom.
The Veterans' Memorial Museum welcomes the
participation of military and veterans' groups and individuals in making the Museum a
valued educational and memorial attraction in North Alabama. If you would like to
volunteer exhibits, sponsorship, time, or funds, please contact us. We have a
particular need for volunteers to sponsor vehicles and wall displays.
Remember, we are an all-volunteer organization. We have no paid
staff, receive no appropriated funds and depend completely on volunteer support. Any donations of your time, memorabilia,
building improvements, or funds go directly toward making the Museum an asset to the City
of Huntsville and the State of Alabama. We are normally open
Monday-Saturday 8-4 for
development of exhibits. We have an immediate need for volunteers:
- To assist in restoration of several armored
vehicles and aircraft
- To do a couple of days of licensed plumbing
