-----Japanese Carriers at Midway

Akagai:

The Akagi was a Japanese aircraft carrier named after Mt Akagi. The name means "Red Castle". The ship was designed as a battle cruiser, but was converted into a carrier to comply with the Washington Naval Treaty. The Akagi was the second carrier to enter service with the Japanese Navy and was also the first large fleet carrier. The Akagi was the flagship for the Japan's First  Air Fleet. The Akagi took part in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Akagi took part in the Battle of Midway in June, 1942. The ship was scuttled by her crew after being heavily damaged by bomber aircraft from the Enterprise.

Kaga:

The Kaga was originally designed to be a Tosa class battleship however, it was converted under the Washington Naval treaty to aircraft carrier to replace the battle cruiser Amagi.  The Kaga was rebuilt in 1933-1935 with modifications that increased the ships top speed, improved its exhaust system and re-enforced flight decks for heavier aircraft. The Kaga participated in the Pearl Harbor Raid and the Invasion of Rabaul. The Kaga was part of the Japanese 1st Fleet at Midway. The Kaga was attacked by aircraft from Midway and aircraft from the Hornet, Enterprise, and the Yorktown. The Kaga was so heavily damaged that the ship was scuttled by her crew to prevent the ship from capture.

Soryu:

The Soryu was an aircraft carrier built for the Japanese Imperial Navy. The Soryu participated in the Japanese Invasion of French Indo China in mid-1940, the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Wake Island. The Soryu was part of the Japanese 1st Fleet at Midway. The Soryu was attacked by aircraft from the Hornet, Enterprise and Yorktown. The ship was so heavily damaged that it was scuttled by her crew.

Hiryu:

The Hiryu was a Japanese aircraft carrier built in the 1930s. It was the only vessel of its class. The Hiryu participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Wake Island. After bombarding the Midway Atoll, the Hiryu was attacked by aircraft from the Enterprise, Yorktown and the Hornet. The ship was scuttled when it became evident that it could not be salvaged.
