Mighty Mite
Mighty Mite

3922 of these lightweight jeeps were produced for the Marine Corps between 1960 and 1963. Designated the M422, these jeeps had an all aluminum body and an air cooled engine which helped keep their weight down to about 1700 pounds. The intention was to have a Jeep light enough to be transported by the helicopters available at the time (lift capability by helicopters in the early 1960s was somewhat limited). The unique suspension of this vehicle allows it to traverse obstacles with any one of its wheels completely removed. Its four-cylinder, 108 cubic inch engine, produces 55 hp. The U.S. Veterans Memorial Museum's Mighty Mite that is pictured is on loan from Museum volunteer Tom Campbell from Birmingham Alabama.
